Groundhogs, also known as a woodchucks or land beavers, belong to a class of large ground squirrels known as marmots. burrowing rodents that spend most of their lives underground. Groundhogs can grow to 26 inches and weigh about 8 pounds. They have two sets of fur to keep them warm; the first layer is a dense, gray undercoat, and the second layer is longer coat made up of lighter hairs that give them that distinct frosted look. Their limbs are shorter but are very efficient and powerful diggers because of their curved and thick claws. They live in tunnel systems that can have up to five entrances and total around 50 feet in length. They create a main den to live in, and to hibernate in, and their tunnels will branch out from there. They can climb and swim, but they mostly stay in fields to forage.

Groundhogs are mostly agricultural nuisances because of their foraging. They will destroy gardens and eat all reachable fruits and vegetables. However, their tunnels can also cause damage to lawns and house foundations.
